POSITION
TITLE: FIREFIGHTER / EMT
The
following position description is established by the
Board of Directors of the Frederick-Firestone Fire
Protection District to outline the basic requirements,
duties, and responsibilities of the full-time position
of paid Firefighter/EMT. This position is “at-will,”
which means that the Fire District or the employee may
terminate the employment relationship at any time and
for no reason.
Supervisor: Shift Officer
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Firefighting requires skills in combating, extinguishing
and preventing fire and other emergencies, and in
responding to emergency alarms. The Firefighter/EMT’s
work requires extensive training in the performance of
firefighting, rescue, hazardous materials, and emergency
medical assistance. The primary duties and
responsibilities of a Firefighter/EMT include, but are
not limited to:

Consistently promote a professional image of the Fire
District during performance of all duties.

Successfully complete all training necessary to meet
the duties of the position.
-
Understand and follow detailed oral and written
instructions of superior officers.
-
Clearly and concisely communicate, both verbally and
in writing, information necessary to successfully
conduct all duties and responsibilities.
-
Interact and cooperate in a positive and professional
manner with other personnel, career or volunteer, of
the Fire District.
-
Maintain awareness of, and compliance with, all rules,
policies and procedures of the Fire District.
-
Maintain a current awareness of all streets, roads,
and address systems within the Fire District’s
jurisdiction.
-
Safely, competently and efficiently operate all Fire
District apparatus, vehicles and equipment.
-
Routinely inspect Fire District apparatus, vehicles
and equipment to insure proper and safe operating
condition, including radio communications equipment,
emergency warning devices, fuel, and lubrication.
-
Carefully examine the motor and mechanical parts after
each response; keep the fuel tank and oiling system
fully supplied; keep all friction parts properly
lubricated; keep the motor, pump and other mechanical
parts clean and serviceable at all times. Immediately
inform the Fire Chief or designee of all necessary
supplies or repairs.

Perform scheduled maintenance of the apparatus, as
required, including washing, waxing, changing
lubricants and filters.

Inspect the pumping apparatus, compartments and loads
to insure the presence, cleanliness and serviceability
of necessary firefighting and emergency equipment,
tools and supplies, including hose loads, booster
tank, water, ladders, nozzles, adapters, forcible
entry tools, ventilation equipment, first-aid and
medical equipment.

Cooperate with the officer in charge to deliver the
apparatus or vehicle to an emergency with the least
possible delay, considering all safety factors.

Drive
the assigned apparatus or vehicle on fire and
emergency calls, routine inspection tours, and
training drills; operate and serve as Firefighter/EMT
on the assigned pumping apparatus at fire and
emergency scenes; position apparatus at emergency and
fire scenes in accordance with the superior officer’s
instructions; attach supply and attack lines to inlets
and discharges; prime and operate pumps, including the
operation of gears, valves, governor controls, etc.,
to supply sufficient water under correct pressures to
firefighting personnel; and monitor and adjust pumping
equipment as required.

Issue
supplies, tools, and equipment to firefighting
personnel at fire and emergency scenes; direct and
participate in reloading of equipment, tools and
supplies on engine upon completion of fire and
emergency activities.

Participate in and ensure that equipment, tools and
supplies are cleaned, repaired, replenished and
reloaded on the pumping apparatus as required to
insure serviceable conditions for the next response,
including cleaning and reloading of hose beds, the
replenishment of air tanks and water supply in booster
tanks, and replacement of damaged and/or missing
equipment, etc.

Perform the duties of a Firefighter/EMT as required;
shall perform search, rescue and/or extrication
activities; shall assist in the locating and
suppression of fire shall perform salvage and overhaul
operations.

Provide, and/or assist in providing, emergency medical
services to victims of medical emergencies, fires,
auto accidents, etc., in accordance with prescribed
emergency medical care procedures, and within the
scope of services permitted by State of Colorado EMT
certification.

Participate in and respond to fire and other emergency
alarms, in accordance with prescribed training and
safety practices to minimize public and personal
hazards.

Participate effectively in after fire clean up,
salvage, and construction work as required.
-
Take
proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe
circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent
accidents. Responsible for safety of self, others,
materials and equipment. Use all safety equipment.

Maintain all Fire District required certifications and
training requirements.
-
Participate in all required training.
-
Perform other tasks as may be assigned from time to
time.
-
Maintain an “average” rating as directed in the Fire
District Physical Fitness Standards Program.
Mandatory Education and Experience:
-
High
school diploma or equivalent.
-
Ability to pass promotion examinations, if required.
-
Ability to read, write, speak and understand the
English language at a level adequate to perform job
functions, including report writing.
-
Current IFSAC Firefighter I certification
-
Successfully complete Driver Operator certification
with Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District.
-
Current National Registry or State of Colorado EMT-B
certification or higher
-
American Heart or equivalent CPR Certification
-
Must
be willing to complete assigned or required courses
and seminars to assist in personal development
-
Must
be able to meet the demands of the position. A minimum
qualification standard is unrestrictive mobility. May
not have any conditions which would restrict job
performance.

Must
be able to follow written and oral instructions.
-
Possess and maintain haz-mat operations certification.
-
Possess and maintain a personnel record free from any
felony charges.
-
Possess and maintain a current driver’s license for
the State of Colorado and a safe driving record.
-
Gain
and maintain current knowledge of the streets and road
systems of the Fire District.
-
Gain
and maintain knowledge of the general physical layout
of the Fire District and its boundaries.
-
Possess the knowledge and skills to perform a variety
of fire suppression duties and methods.
-
Possess the knowledge and skills to perform a variety
of rescue duties and methods.
-
Possess the knowledge and skills to perform and/or
assist in medical emergency duties and methods within
the scope of certification as State of Colorado EMT.
-
Obtain State of Colorado Firefighter II certification
within two years of original hire date.
Working Environment/Physical Requirements:
This
position requires work in a variety of locations and
conditions, including but not limited to, the fire
station and other similar inside work areas, and
emergency scenes of every type.
-
Strenuous physical activity under extreme adverse
conditions is required.
-
Must
possess the ability to lift items in excess of one
hundred fifty (150) pounds occasionally, and up to
sixty (60) pounds frequently.
-
Requires standing, walking, stooping/bending, lifting,
crawling, jumping, sliding, climbing, and repetitive
motion.
-
Work
is performed in all weather conditions and in extreme
temperatures below twenty degrees (20°) Fahrenheit and in excess of one hundred degrees (100°)
Fahrenheit.
-
Work
is performed under hazardous and adverse conditions,
including but not limited to, slippery/uneven
surfaces, proximity to moving mechanical equipment,
burning structures, broken glass or other materials,
electrical currents, high places and confined spaces.
-
Work
may result in exposure to smoke, gases, chemicals,
fumes, odors, mists and dusts, which can affect the
respiratory system or skin.
-
Work
may result in exposure to high noise levels requiring
the wearing of hearing protection.
-
This
position demands frequent use of sensory activities
such as talking, seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling
(identifying objects by touch), depth perception and
color vision.
-
This
position requires the ability to read, write, speak
and understand the English language at a level
adequate to perform the job.

Medical Skills Assessment
Board Interview
Chief Interview

Applicants must schedule with AIMS Community College in
Greeley, CO to take the Accu-Placer Test on their own.
The test must be completed, and the results submitted to
the Fire Chief prior to the position closing date for
eligibility to continue in the assessment process. The
fee for the Accu-Placer test is $25.00 and payment must
be coordinated with AIMS Community College directly.
