Insurance Service Office (ISO) Rating 

ISO’s Public Protection Classification Program (PPC) plays an important role in the underwriting process at insurance companies. In fact, most U.S. insurers – including the largest ones use PPC information as part of their decision making when deciding what business or residence to write, coverages to offer, or prices to charge for personal or commercial property insurance.

Frederick-Firestone Fire District has an Insurance Service Office (ISO) rating of a 2/2X. An ISO score is given on a scale from 1 – 10 and it is used to determine how much risk there is to fire protection within a community. The District has a score of 2 for any residence or business within 5 miles of a fire station. Any residence or business outside the 5 miles, may have a score of X or in our case 2X. Many times, this has to do with the availability of community water, i.e., fire hydrants.

The lower the score, the less risk there is.  This objective isn’t easy to undertake and the District is graded on community water supply, the number of personnel, training, station locations and response times, emergency communications, apparatus fleet, standard operating procedures, and data tracking, just to name a few.  

Fire Chief Jeremy Young’s vision is for the District to someday soon to be an ISO Class 1, he stated, “By the District continuing to lower our ISO score, we, in turn, lower the risk of losing life and property. A lower score also helps the Towns of Frederick and Firestone within our District in pursuing economic development to enhance our communities.”

A lower ISO score will help communities with economic development, business owners may contemplate the location of their new business and would consider all services within the community; a lower ISO rating would be a factor in deciding where they locate and operate their business.  A lower score can result in savings of home or business insurance premiums.
